Commissioners Fire Indianapolis
Board Chair Amid Tax Dispute

In the wake of a March court ruling that county officials did not have the authority to cut a $3.5-million tax increase from the Indianapolis-Marion County Library’s budget, county commissioners rescinded their earlier decision to reappoint library board President Kerry Spradlin.

The commissioners claimed Spradlin had failed to keep them informed about the tax measure, the Indianapolis Star/News reported April 28. “You should have asked us if we had strong feelings about the manner in which the library board should deal with the issue,” said a letter from the commissioners. Spradlin said the three commissioners never called her.

Council Democratic leader Rozelle Boyd maintained that “The commissioners essentially said that since the city administration lost its case in court, . . . we will undo the decision of the court by undoing the library board itself.”

The commission will reconsider the decision at a May 20 meeting. “We’ve agreed to talk about it,” said commissioner Martha Womacks. “I would like to think that I’m open minded.”
