Library Recoups Interest
on Delayed Bequest

Columbia County, Georgia, library trustees successfully recovered $8,500 in interest on a gift bequeathed to the Harlem Library by Madelyn Anne Creech upon her death in 1994.

Library Board Chairman Jeff Hardin told American Libraries that Howard G. Roberts III, the executor of the estate, had failed to notify the library of the $40,000 gift until September 1998, four years after the will was probated. The board voted March 9 to take legal action in concert with three other community-service organizations similarly affected, but Roberts relented and sent the county a check on April 28.

Hardin said the money would be used to establish an endowment in Creech’s name to renovate and expand the Harlem Library.
