Southfield, Michigan, Approves
Tax Levy for New Library

Voters in Southfield, Michigan, approved a 1.2-mill tax levy March 9 to build and operate a new 95,000-square-foot library that will double the size of the existing facility and double the number of public-access computers from the current 43. The building will anchor a city center of new housing, offices, and shops that’s now under construction.

The tax increase, which will raise $30 million over 25 years, will cost the owner of a $130,000 home $78 annually, the Detroit Free Press reported March 10.

The approval follows unsuccessful millage attempts in 1990 and 1995. The margin of victory, according to an unofficial count, was 3,316 to 2,154. Only 8.6% of the city’s 63,898 registered voters cast ballots.
