Savannah Decision Delayed to Await
Black Caucus Report

Library board members on March 23 postponed a decision whether to close six branches of the Chatham-Effingham-Liberty Regional Library in Savannah, Georgia, until a committee of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association can complete a site survey and make its recommendations.

The caucus offered to review the situation after a local grass-roots organization, the Concerned Citizens for Library Preservation, asked for an assessment, according to the March 24 Savannah Morning News. Board Chairman Jack Kaster opened the meeting by reading a letter from Black Caucus President Gregory Reese, who asked for the delay: "The Black Caucus of the American Library Association is truly concerned that the informational needs of the African-American community are justly served," it read in part.

Caucus recommendations will be presented within 30 days; meanwhile the board unanimously agreed to gather more information and public input before voting.
