Report Documents Patrons
Accessing Online Porn
A companion bill to the Senate's measure tying e-rate subsidies to the installation of filtering software was introduced in the House March 2. At a Washington press conference in support of the bill (H.R. 368), filtering advocate David Burt released a report that he said documents 503 incidents of patrons accessing pornography in public libraries. The report, titled Dangerous Access, states that children were involved in 245 of the incidents, and 20 involved child pornography.
Burt, president of the profiltering organization Filtering Facts, decried the American Library Association's opposition to filters. “Not only is ALA denying there is a problem, but their advice to libraries is to cover up the problem by installing privacy screens.”
Also participating in the press conference were the bill's sponsor, Rep. Bob Franks (R-N.J.), and representatives from Enough is Enough, the Family Research Council, the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families, the National Law Center for Children and Families.
