Plano Children May Need Parents' OK
to Surf at the Library
The Plano (Tex.) City Council asked library officials on March 22 to revise PPL's anti-filtering policy so that parents would have to give written permission before their children could surf the Internet at the library, Gladys Harrington branch manager Sandy Gillman has confirmed for American Libraries. The revision would then be brought to the council for their approval.
Although it is a nonbinding directive without a deadline, the recommendation has edged council members closer to requiring the library to install blocking software on its public-access machines once they're presented with a policy they find acceptable.
In making their recommendations, officials are continuing a course they embarked upon five months ago after a patron complained that two boys had been displaying "girlie pictures." In the meantime, library staffers "continue to look at filters to keep up with the technology," Gillman said.
