OCLC, PAIS Negotiate MergerOCLC and PAIS announced February 24 that they have signed a letter of intent to merge. The two high-profile nonprofit library service corporations have been in negotiations since June. In announcing the plan, OCLC said that—subject to satisfactory negotiations and approvals by both boards of trustees and by state authorities—the merger could result in OCLC providing access to PAIS databases via the Internet while they are expanded and new OCLC/PAIS databases are constructed. The companies hope to complete the transaction by April. Based in New York City, the Public Affairs Information Service was founded in 1914 by librarians, and its database contains over 450,000 records. The Online Computer Library Center is based in Dublin, Ohio, and its networks and services link more than 33,000 libraries in 67 countries. Posted March 1, 1999. |
