Montana Districting Legislation FailsA bill in the Montana House of Representatives that would have allowed libraries to form county-sized library districts, where taxes could be collected specifically for library funding, failed a third reading by a 51–49 vote February 3. Darlene Staffeldt, director of statewide library resources at the Montana State Library, told American Libraries House Bill 152 had passed a second reading in the House February 2 with a 58–41 vote but died on the third reading. She noted that the bill would not be resurrected this session but would probably be reintroduced in the next. Posted March 1, 1999. |
