Hennepin County Cataloger Demands Reprimand Be RescindedSanford Berman, head cataloger at Hennepin County Library in Minnesota, has demanded publicly that a written reprimand he received February 22 from Director Charles Brown and Assistant Division Manager Elizabeth Feinberg be rescinded with an apology. The reprimand asserted that Berman's wide distribution of a letter critical of AACR2 cataloging rules was inappropriate and detrimental to the library's recent decision to join OCLC and implement AACR2. Berman, whose crusade for user-friendly cataloging is legendary, posted a request for support for his right “to freely address professional and policy issues without fear of reprisal” on the ALA Council list and distributed documentation of the incident—including his rebuttal and Brown's refusal to take back the reprimand—to the press. Brown told American Libraries he had no intention of rescinding the reprimand. He observed that Berman “should be leading the implementation, not undermining it. He has considerable technical expertise, but he also needs to understand more clearly the managerial aspects and responsibilities of his position.” Posted March 8, 1999. |
