Gates Initiative Opens New Round of Grants, Forms Advisory GroupThe Gates Library Initiative has announced that applications for a third round of grants have been distributed to the state library agencies of Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Wyoming, and to provincial and territorial library agencies in Canada. In addition, GLI has formed an advisory group to provide counsel on its U.S. programs. Since 1997, 32 states have been selected for grants based on their poverty levels as determined by the 1990 census. GLI launched the Canadian partnership in October 1998 and has been working with Statistics Canada to establish library eligibility in areas with greater than 17.6% poverty. The deadline for applications from libraries in the U.S. is April 30, from Canada April 12. The advisory group—librarians John Christensen, Ginnie Cooper, Ken Wiggin, Luis Herrera, Deborah Jacobs, Sara Parker, and Martín Gómez—will be responsible for providing feedback on grant activity and program direction.
