Banned Barron Books Are Back, For Now

Pending the outcome of a First Amendment lawsuit filed against them, Barron (Wis.) Area School District have returned four gay-themed books to high school library shelves and vowed not to remove any other titles for the time being. As a result, Federal District Judge Barbara Crabb cancelled a March 3 hearing on the matter.

“This was in part a tactical move to reduce the expense of this litigation to the school board and a decision to get on with pursuing the merits of the case,” school district attorney William Thiel told the March 2 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “This is not a victory over censorship yet,” ACLU of Wisconsin Executive Director Chris Ahmuty said in a March 1 statement, speaking for the six plaintiffs and their families represented by the civil-liberties group.

No trial date has been set for the case, which seeks the permanent restoration of Baby Be-Bop, The Drowning of Stephan Jones, When Someone You Know Is Gay, and Two Teenagers in Twenty.
