ALA Washington Office Director Henderson Announces RetirementCarol Henderson, executive director of the American Library Association's Washington Office since 1994, announced March 23 that she will retire August 13. Henderson, who is 60, said the early retirement was prompted by health problems. "I don't see any way to do this job at less than full tilt," Henderson told American Libraries. "I'm a firm believer in going out when you're at peak." Citing passage of the Library Services and Technology Act, telecommunications discounts for libraries and schools, and revisions to copyright law as the main achievements of her tenure, she said, "It's a job that has given me immense satisfaction." Henderson joined the ALA staff in 1975 as assistant director in the Washington Office. From 1969 to 1972 she was a librarian at George Mason University in Virginia. She said relaxation and leisure travel are her retirement goals. ALA Executive Director William Gordon said the search for Henderson's replacement would begin soon. Posted March 29, 1999. |
