Legislative Analyst Opposes
San Jose Joint-Use Library

A fiscal analyst for the California Legislature has called the $171-million proposed joint-use library facility to serve San Jose residents and San Jose State University students unnecessary and too costly.

In her February 16 report on the state's fiscal health, Legislative Analyst Elizabeth Hill called for legislators to withdraw their support for the joint library, saying the action would save the state $102.5 million. She also noted that the library could present financial problems if disputes arose between the city and the university.

The analyst prepares an annual review of the governor's proposed budget, which the legislature uses to prepare its own budget before the start of the fiscal year July 1.

The San Jose Mercury News reported February 17 that local legislators vowed to continue to fight for state funding for the project.
