The Broward County, Florida, board of commissioners unanimously gave the green light June 8 to build a new, 165,000-square-foot public library in partnership with Nova Southeastern University Libraries in Fort Lauderdale.
The facility’s estimated $42.4-million price tag is to be split between the county library and Nova. To be situated on the university’s Davie campus, the joint-use library will have room for 500,000 volumes and will feature a 300- to 500-seat auditorium, in addition to Internet access and electronic classrooms.
Nova President Ray Ferro Jr. told the June 9 Miami Herald that the partnership may be the first between a private university and a public library.
The university had originally proposed the partnership with the county last fall. Construction is slated to begin no later than September.
