Virginia School Librarian Charged
with Assault for Slapping Boy
In Woodbridge, Virginia, Minnieville Elementary School librarian Matthew Beall will face assault charges for allegedly slapping a 9-year-old-boy who refused to take a lollipop out of his mouth before entering the library.
According to the Fairfax Journal, police obtained a warrant July 9 charging the 47-year-old with assault and battery, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail or a $2,500 fine. School Superintendent Ed Kelly told the newspaper, “We are supporting the teacher and will continue to do so until something else happens.” Beall was unavailable for comment.
The incident occurred June 11 and the boy was reportedly not injured. “The suspect allegedly slapped the victim in the face causing the lollipop to fall out of his mouth,” said a Prince William County police spokesperson.
