New Jersey Gets $45 Million
for Library Construction

The New Jersey Senate June 30 approved a $45-million public-library aid package for construction of new libraries, renovation and expansion of existing facilities, land acquisition, site improvement, furniture, and equipment. The state Assembly had approved the bill earlier, and Gov. Christie Whitman, who lobbied for the program, is expected to sign the legislation. Libraries must apply to the New Jersey Education Facilities Authority for the grant money.

Legislators, however, rejected a plan to provide $6 million for a New Jersey Virtual Library that would have expanded access to online periodicals. According to the Associated Press, library advocates, including New Jersey Library Association Director Patricia Tumulty, say they will lobby legislators to add the funding by this fall.
