Kennedy Library Offers Condolence Book,
Extends Hours to Accommodate Crowds
The John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Boston pushed its closing time ahead from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 22 to accommodate the thousands of visitors who showed up to sign a book of condolences in the library lobby. More than 3,000 people visited the library in the two days following the news that John F. Kennedy Jr.’s airplane had crashed into the Atlantic, killing him, his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister Lauren Bessette.
JFK Jr. served as vice-chairman of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and was a permanent member of the foundation’s Profile in Courage Award Committee. He last visited the library May 23–24 for a fundraiser and award presentation.
“John’s tragic loss leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts and lives of his friends on the board and staff,” said Paul G. Kirk Jr., foundation board chair. “He gave generously of his time, talent, ideas, and resources.”
