Inventor Creates $850,000 Check for Toledo-Lucas County Public Library

The Toledo-Lucas County (Ohio) Public Library reaped its largest donation ever July 13, when Harold and Helen McMaster gave a check for $850,000 to the library. The money will fund the creation of the McMaster Family Lifelong Learning Center, which will include a 300-seat teleconference-capable auditorium.

“I was coming from [Ohio State University] and the study room for technology was well-decorated,” Harold McMaster said at the presentation of his pleasure at discovering the library in 1940. Cofounder of Solar Cells, Inc., he holds more than 100 patents for glass-bending machinery and solar cell panels. “We’ve come here to the public library all our lives,” Helen McMaster noted.

The McMasters’ gift arrived on the eve of the library’s capital fundraising campaign launch for the main facility’s expansion, the Toledo Blade reported July 14. The couple became interested in giving to the library after being approached by a Solar Cells board member who is also serving on the Library Legacy Committee.
