Fairfax County Library
Attributes Record Circulation to Internet

The Fairfax County (Va.) Public Library loaned more than 10 million books and other items during the fiscal year that ended June 30, more than 400,000 more than last year and the most ever in the system’s 60-year history.

Circulation Manager Sharon Scott credits the Internet with helping to boost circulation. “We are constantly working to make it as easy as possible for patrons to check out materials. Patrons can reserve books by phone or over the Internet, and pick them up at the most convenient branch.”

“We track reading trends very closely and strategically buy higher-demand titles,” adds Director Edwin S. Clay III, noting heavy borrowing of computer, health, travel, and home-decorating titles. Deputy Director Judith Anderson noted that “The board of supervisors’ decision to increase our book budget last year allows us to buy more of the books that citizens want to read, and they have responded by borrowing more.”
