Dole Blasts Library Cyberporn

Republican presidential candidate Elizabeth Dole called on Congress June 28 to withhold federal funds from public libraries that don’t install blocking software for pornographic Internet sites. Her comments were made during a press conference at the Bellevue (Washington) Regional Library, according to the Associated Press June 29.

“We shouldn’t let pornography slip in through an electronic back door,” she said. “Libraries shouldn’t use federal tax money to put pornography on their shelves and they shouldn’t put it on their desktops or laptops.” She noted she had sent letters to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) asking to extend screening rules to all computers in public schools and libraries, not just those for children.

James King, BRL manager, told American Libraries that Dole had told him she chose his library to show support for its use of filters. At the event King retorted that only two of 40 Internet stations were blocked and library policy advocated free access to the Internet.

Dole made similar remarks July 1 at the Des Moines Public Library in Iowa, urging that “tax dollars should never be used to poison our children or provide free pornography for adults.”
