Library Staff and Board Stand Firm
on Disputed Books

Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy’s Roommate were also up for reconsideration recently at the Nampa (Idaho) Public Library, whose board July 8 reaffirmed the staff’s decision to keep the two titles in the young-adult section. According to a July 9 Associated Press report, the library had already transferred the books from the children’s picture-book area to juvenile nonfiction after several residents expressed alarm.

“Public libraries are supported by and serve all people in the community,” Assistant Director Camille Wood told reporters. “We don’t limit our selection to the view of one community section.”

Many observers at the board meeting agreed with her. “These books are not pornography,” library user Stephanie Holland-Bouneff told the board. “What a sad and scary place Nampa will be if we start censoring information because someone doesn’t like [the] content.”
