Texas School Library Closed
for Poor Air Quality
Since the beginning of January, the librarian and library aide at Travis Elementary School in Greenville, Texas, have been afflicted with headaches and allergic reactions. School district maintenance staff examined the library's air conditioning as a probable source on January 13, but as they were doing so, a water heater vent in a storage room next to the library became clogged. The resulting fumes caused the library aide to be hospitalized briefly, according to the January 14 Greenville Herald Banner.
School officials closed the library the following day. “The water-heater vent problem has been solved,” said public information officer Brad Press, but the library will remain closed “until independent air-quality studies can verify that all air-quality issues have been corrected.”
