South Africa's Two National Libraries to MergeThe South Africa Library in Cape Town and the State Library in Pretoria have announced that they will merge to form one institution, to be called the National Library of South Africa. The State Library is the nation's lending library, while the South Africa Library is the reference library, but the existence of dual libraries has caused confusion among patrons about the function of each. The merger follows passage of the National Library of South Africa Bill in Parliament last November. “It's something that should have happened 100 years ago,” SAL Director Carryl Allardice said in the January 11 Cape Times.
