Parents to Be Billed If Latchkey Child
Pickup Is Overdue

Beginning in February, parents who leave their children at the San Marino (Calif.) Public Library 15 minutes past closing time will have to reimburse the police for picking them up. A city ordinance, expected to take effect after a second hearing on February 10, is intended to spare library staff the responsibility of waiting after hours with the children or driving them home.

Although it only happens occasionally, City Librarian Carolyn Crain told American Libraries that she brought the matter to the city manager's attention because her staff was concerned about the children's safety. First-time parental offenders will receive a warning, but second-timers will be sent a bill for the police officer's time.
