Maine Bill Seeks to Consolidate Cultural Grants

Seven arts organizations in Maine have submitted a bill to the state legislature that asks for an annual $3.6-million cultural initiative to improve public libraries, preserve historic sites and records, expand literacy programs, and disseminate historical documents on the Internet. According to the January 11 Bangor Daily News, $1.5 million would go toward library renovation, construction, extended hours, and resource sharing.

The initiative was proposed by the Maine State Library, the Maine Arts Commission, the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, the Maine State Museum, the Maine Historical Society, the Maine State Archives, and the Maine Humanities Council. State Library Director Gary Nichols told American Libraries that state legislators came up with the idea “in order to consolidate the various cultural requests into one package.” The bill is expected to be voted on before the current session ends in April.
