Illinois State Library Director Resigns
to Accept Post in Governor's Cabinet

Illinois State Library Director Bridget Lamont has resigned to become director of policy development for newly elected Illinois Governor George Ryan. She moves to her new quarters in the capitol building in Springfield January 21.

The cabinet-post appointment was “totally unexpected,” she said, but offers “the chance of a lifetime to build on so many things that are important to libraries.” Lamont said that when she asked the governor to describe the job, he said, “It means coming up with good ideas of things that we ought to do,” and she was sold.

Although the position will involve her in “environmental and resource issues, agriculture, technology, economic development” and other areas, Lamont said her devotion to libraries will not waver. “I'm not giving up my ALA membership,” she said.
