Clinton Resubmits Controversial Envoy Nomination to Senate

President Clinton has resubmitted his controversial nomination of philanthropist James Hormel as ambassador to Luxembourg, which stalled in the Senate last year over his support of gay causes, the San Francisco Chronicle reported January 12.

Following Hormel's nomination in October 1997, conservative groups led by the Traditional Values Coalition attacked his involvement in gay causes, particularly his donation of $500,000 in 1996 to establish San Francisco Public Library's James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center, which contains materials the coalition deemed obscene. Although the appointment was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) refused to submit it to the full Senate.

Last year, SFPL City Librarian Regina Minudri confirmed to American Libraries that Hormel had no input into the center and has never suggested materials for it. Citing his modesty, she added, “He actually did not want it named for him. The gay community here insisted on it.”
