Civil War Records Returned to
West Virginia University Library

Three dozen Civil War records, including a journal written by Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, have been returned to the Colson Library at the University of West Virginia after their apparent theft more than three years ago.

According to a December 4 Associated Press story, library officials apparently were unaware of the theft until a still-unidentified WVU student spotted the Jackson journal in 1995 in a private museum and artifact shop in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The AP story said “a friend of a friend of a friend” had given the journal to the shop so it could be sold on consignment. Following the death of the shopkeeper, the journal and the rest of the documents were returned to the university on November 30.

No money exchanged hands, and police said no arrests were made and none are likely.
