Chinese Librarians Meet to Improve Information Sharing

Representatives from over 120 Chinese libraries and information centers met in Beijing January 14 to discuss ways to improve information sharing that would boost the nation's economic development, China Daily reported January 15.

In a response to a recent call by President Jiang Zemin at the National Library of China to promote the love of books nationwide, participants agreed to set up national document and information networks to encourage the sharing of resources. The networks would convert traditional library resources into digital form, develop databases, and offer online lending and reference services.

“There should be a set of unified rules and technical standards for digitizing the resources and transmitting them to networks,” said Minister of Culture Sun Jiazheng., who told the participants that libraries have a key role to play in promoting China's scientific and technological development and in improving society.

The networks would also enable the nation's libraries to coordinate their ordering of foreign books and periodicals to avoid redundant imports.
