California's New Governor
Calls for School Reading Initiatives
Newly installed California Governor Gray Davis, who made education a major campaign theme, took the first steps to deliver on that promise just two days after his inauguration.
The $444 million in education initiatives announced in Davis's first State of the State address January 6 included $186 million for reading programs. According to the previous day's San Francisco Chronicle, his plan would include reading-instruction academies for K–4 students, a Governor's Reading Award program offering elementary and middle schools cash awards for meeting reading targets, and more funds for classroom libraries.
Davis's January 8 budget message was expected to contain details of his education proposals. He has also scheduled a special legislative session on education for January 19.
