California Digital Library Launches Web SiteWith the launching of its Web site January 20, the California Digital Library opened its digital “doors” to the public. Begun in October 1997 to complement the physical libraries on the University of California's nine campuses, the CDL selects, manages, preserves, and provides access to shared digital collections. The new Web site contains a browsable and searchable Directory of Collections and Services that provides unified access to over 2,000 electronic journals, databases, and finding aids in the Online Archive of California. It complements the Melvyl Catalog and the California Periodicals Database—also available through the site—as well as local campus library catalogs and other databases. The CDL is also collaborating with the California State Library to build the Library of California, a digitally constructed library that may eventually link all of the state's public, private, school, and academic libraries—as well as many of its museums and think-tanks—into one of the world's largest electronic information-sharing networks.
