Broken Water Pipe Floods
Idaho High School Library

A water pipe over the library at South Fremont High School in St. Anthony, Idaho, burst sometime Christmas day, destroying at least 40% of the collection.

A pipe leading to a custodial closet had broken the day before, County School Superintendent Michael Call told the December 30 Idaho Falls Post-Register. Call said school employees had mistakenly thought they had thawed all the frozen pipes December 23.

The cost of the damage won't be known until the school's media specialist can inventory the books and determine replacement costs, said Call.

This was the second time pipes had burst since the school opened in 1997. After the initial incident, the school district thought contractors had fixed the problem, the Post-Register reported. The district now plans to increase the amount of insulation on the pipes and improve the school's heating system.
