Ventura County System Ends
Yearlong Director Search
After searching for a year, the Ventura County (Calif.) Library Commission has selected a new director: Starrett Kreissman, director of the Stanislaus County library system for six years and the California Library Association's 1998 Member of the Year.
“We are extremely pleased to have found her,” Interim Director Richard Rowe told the Los Angeles Times February 9. “She's dynamic, she's enthusiastic, and she has a broad breadth of experience.”
The 15-branch system has struggled to fill the position: Four candidates previously offered the job all either turned it down or made unmeetable salary demands. Consultants then began seeking out candidates, which led to Kreissman.
Kreissman, who must be approved by the county board of supervisors before beginning the $103,515-per-year position March 29, faces serious budget problems: Following a reorganization designed to give local communities more control over their branches, the financially strapped system cut 11 positions to buy new books and equipment and maintain extended hours.
