UNLV Library Building Needs More Support

Because of incorrect estimates of the weight needed for materials in the University of Nevada/Las Vegas's new $40-million Lied Library, the building's second and third floors will have to be reinforced before the building can be opened.

The Las Vegas Sun reported January 23 that while engineers, architects, and library staff are arguing over who is to blame, the flooring on the building's second and third floors must be strengthened to support the weight of compact shelving for the library's government documents and special collections.

“We're looking at several issues,” Patrick Batte of the State Public Works Board told the paper. “Why wasn't it part of the original design? Did the library staff give the architects all the information?” The problems were first noticed in November, and the extra work could delay the scheduled January 2000 opening of the library.
