Rolling Stone Gathers Supporters in School-Library Challenge

More than a year after Kettle Moraine School Board member Gary Vose first voiced objections to the presence of Rolling Stone magazine on the high school library's shelves, the suburban Milwaukee district's Library Materials Review Committee has voted 8–3 to recommend its retention. Remarking that he was “obviously disappointed” by the vote, Vose said he might appeal.

The committee's February 3 vote came at the end of a 30-minute meeting that more than 50 spectators attended, according to the February 4 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. While former school board president Pat DeKlotz argued that the issue was a matter of parental choice, Delafield parent Skip Abbott asserted that exposure to the issues RS covers “is making our young people the fine adults that we want them to be.”

Still pending is a proposal emanating from the controversy that would give the school board final approval over titles media specialists want to purchase.
