Educators Evince Confidence
at ALISE Conference

The theme of this year's conference of the Association for Library and Information Science Education—“Beyond 2000: Designing Education for Library and Information Professionals”—reflected the association's goal to bring together educators, practitioners, employers, and students, along with related organizations and government agencies. The meeting, held in Philadelphia January 26–29, drew some 360 registrants.

Concerns over the efficacy of library-education programs were addressed at an open hearing on ALA's forthcoming Congress on Professional Education, where Steering Committee members outlined the development of the congress, discussed issues that are likely to be examined, and took comments and answered questions from ALISE members.

Conference participants presented much evidence of the health of the schools. ALISE members spoke confidently about the future of library and information science education, and many were recruiting for faculty positions in response to increased enrollments. New faculty members were heavily represented on panels and in presentations of research papers.

A report on the ALISE conference will appear in the March American Libraries.
