Carpet Cleaning Leads to Moldy Books at University of New Orleans

A carpet cleaning last July at the University of New Orleans' Earl K. Long Library State has led to a mold infestation of the 900,000 books, creating a health hazard for patrons and staff.

University President Greg O'Brien said in the January 21 New Orleans Times Picayune that the state Interim Emergency Board approved $1.56 million to clean up the books, which are valued at $45 million. In addition, the university will seek $1.26 million from the Board of Regents in a capital outlay request.

State officials told the board that the problem arose after university staff had the library carpets steam cleaned, then shut off the air conditioning when the university closed for the long July 4 weekend.
