Diane B. Frankel announced February 18 that she will step down as director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington at the end of March to become program director in children, youth, and families at the James Irvine Foundation in California.
Frankel was appointed director of the Institute of Museum Services in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and led the agency through its 1996 transition to include federal library as well as museum programs. As part of the reorganization, Frankel initiated a new Office of Research and Technology, and she is credited with reforms that will have long-term impact on improving the administration of IMLS grants.
Clinton commented, “Diane Frankel's outstanding leadership skills have expertly guided the Institute of Museum and Library Services through a period of growth and change. Hillary and I are indeed grateful for her five-and-a-half years of dedicated service.”
