Columbine Plan Calls for New LibraryThe old Columbine High School library, culminating point of a murder rampage that claimed 15 lives April 20, will be converted into a two-story atrium and a new library built elsewhere in the school, according to a plan proposed December 9 to the Jefferson County, Colorado, school board. Since August, parents of students slain in the massacre have lobbied for the elimination of the room, saying they did not want future students studying in a place that had been the scene of so much terror. The Denver Post reported December 7 that the plan includes a memorandum of understanding between the school district and the parents. The agreement with the parents, whose group goes by the name HOPE (Healing of People Everywhere), calls for $3.1 million in private funds to be raised for the project. Before the plan is adopted, HOPE is seeking more detail in the agreement that would ensure the project’s completion. Of the 13 people massacred at Columbine, 10 were killed in the library. The killers, students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, also committed suicide there. Posted December 13, 1999. |
