Clinton Vows to Shut “Digital Divide”President Clinton set a national goal December 9 “finally to slam shut the digital divide” between computer haves and have-nots. “There is still a lot more to do,” he said in a Rose Garden speech. “We must connect all of our citizens to the Internet, not just in schools and libraries, but in homes, small businesses, and community centers, and we must help all Americans gain the skills they need to make the most of the connection.” The president also said he would tour depressed areas of the United States next spring to highlight some Americans’ lack of access to technology. Clinton’s announcement came as the Commerce Department held a summit of some 800 high-tech executive, activists, and regulators to discuss the “digital divide.” The agency issued a report in July showing that the technology gap between white and both black and Hispanic households is continuing to grow.
