Atlanta Library Board
Comes under Scrutiny

The Fulton County Commission December 15 requested a local delegation of the Georgia legislature to review the size, duties, and composition of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library board. The 17-member board came under scrutiny after three library directors resigned over the past two years amid allegations of micromanagement.

The request originally called for the board to be reduced to nine members, though the wording was changed to ask the delegation simply to review the number, according to the December 16 Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The delegation will also consider making the board advisory in nature and giving the county manager sole authority to hire the director.

Only the state legislature can change the board’s composition and duties, but it usually relies on the recommendations supplied by a local delegation.
