Truman Library to Get
$22.5-Million Makeover

The Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, has announced a proposed $22.5-million makeover that will add new exhibit space, as well as three interactive "decision theaters'' that will allow visitors to choose sides on the decisions faced by the president. Construction is expected to begin next May.

Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan kicked off the capital campaign for the project July 28 with a $2 million donation from the state.

The Associated Press reported that new exhibits would explore Truman's role in the Cold War, his decision to recognize Israel, and his handling of Sen. Joseph McCarthy's charges of communist infiltration of the government.

"Almost all museums are going more and more towards some levels of interactivity,'' said library Director Larry Hackman. "I think too many of them think that technology is interactivity, without making the connections to the content and the way it's delivered.''
