Treasurer Charged with Embezzling
from Friends, Church Groups
The treasurer for the Friends of the Bartram Trail branch of the St. Johns County Public Library in St. Augustine, Florida, has been arrested on charges he embezzled $19,600 from the group.
John A. Schaeffer, 58, was also charged with embezzling about $18,000 from a men’s club at a local church. Schaeffer, who served as treasurer for both organizations, was arrested on two counts of grand theft in late May. He pleaded not guilty to both charges at an arraignment in June.
Friends director Donna Braasch told the Jacksonville Times-Union that the organization has lost all the funds it raised during the past five years. “I never dreamed we would not have any money, but it was all gone, all gone,” Braasch told the newspaper.
