Louisiana School Board Settles Lawsuit
Over Four Banned Books
A federal lawsuit filed in 1996 by a school librarian over the removal of four books from the West Monroe (La.) High School library was finally settled August 17, with the Ouachita Parish School Board agreeing to return the books to the library and to develop a new book-selection policy that follows state guidelines for school media programs.
Librarian Deloris Wilson told American Libraries the previous policy “took away individual rights of students and delayed access in a timely manner.” She said that now “the selection of books will be in the hands of the professional librarian instead of a committee of community people.”
The titles are: Heartbreak and Roses: Real Life Stories of Troubled Love by Janet Bode and Stan Mack; Gays: In or Out? The U.S. Military and Homosexuals: A Source Book by Ronald Ray; Everything You Need to Know about Sexual Abstinence by Barbara Moe; and Everything You Need to Know about Incest by Karen Bornemann Spies.
