Three Library Programs Are among
$17.6 Million in NEH Grants

Three library programs are among the 163 grants totaling $17.6 million awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities July 22.

The Huntington Library in San Marino, California, will receive $202,134 (with the possibility of an additional $35,000 in matching funds) for a traveling exhibition at 40 libraries about George Washington and the people of the new American republic. The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities will get $233,934 for scholar-led reading and discussion programs for adult new readers and their families at 20 libraries throughout the country. Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, was awarded $250,000 for programs at public libraries in 18 states to engage citizens in discussion about selected public-policy issues in historical and philosophical perspective.

Other grants went to literacy projects, including a national project by Motheread, Inc., in Raleigh, North Carolina, to incorporate Latino history and literary traditions. A full list of the awards is available on the NEH Web site.
