Wisconsin Rescues BadgerLink

Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson announced April 8 an agreement to continue funding BadgerLink, a popular Web-based information resource that had been left out of the 1999-2001 budget. After librarians pointed out that Library Services and Technology Act funds would no longer cover its operation after January 1, 2000, the state scrambled to find alternative funding.

The new proposal taps into money used to computerize schools under the Technology for Education Achievement (TEACH) program, which is funded by a telephone service surcharge, according to the April 9 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Thompson said that sums of $836,000 in 2000 and $1.7 million in 2001 would be diverted to continue the service, although the plan must be approved by the state legislature.

Bob Jauch (D-Poplar), a member of the Joint Finance Committee, considers the plan’s approval virtually assured. “It should receive widespread support,” he said, “because everyone wants this fixed.”
