USIA Libraries Trashed in Yugoslavia

All three United States Information Agency libraries in Yugoslavia have been trashed by residents infuriated by NATO bombings. The entire American Center in Pristina, Kosovo province, has been burned to the ground, a USIA spokesperson told American Libraries March 31. In Belgrade, assessments of damage to the Information Resource Center (IRC) at the United States Information Service building on the embassy compound and to an IRC reading room at the American Center have been difficult to obtain, but early reports said windows were broken there as well as at the IRC in Podgorica in Montenegro.

The USIA Washington office said it had received a report on the attacks from USIA Public Affairs Officer Douglas Davidson April 2, but he had been evacuated to Vienna following the closure of the American embassy in Belgrade March 24. In an April 2 e-mail message he said no one at the "embassy-in-exile" has been able to confirm the damage reports.

The New York Times News Service reported March 30 that the British Council, the Goethe Institute, and the French Cultural Center had all been trashed along with the American Center in Belgrade.
