School Libraries Featured at Hearing
on ESEA Reauthorization and Technology

As part of its responsibility for Congressional reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act the House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Youth, and Families held a hearing on technology April 12 in the computer and communications lab attached to the Glasgow High School library in Newark, Delaware.

Among those testifying was Delaware State Librarian Tom Sloan, who called the school library media center "the information hub of successful 21st-century schools." He encouraged the subcommittee to provide incentives to establish, maintain, and expand school library media programs that improve student achievement. Sloan's testimony is available on the ALA Washington Office Web site.

Demonstrations of ICONnect (a technology initiative sponsored by ALA's American Association of School Librarians) and UDLibSearch (a University of Delaware library project that provides access to online research material to the state's middle and high schools) were conducted in the school library by the University of Delaware librarians Allison Kaplan and Sandra Miller.
