Savannah Branches to Stay OpenFollowing a recommendation by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association that the library board of the Chatham-Effingham-Liberty Regional Library in Savannah, Georgia, reverse its decision to close six of its branches, the board unanimously voted at its April 20 meeting to keep the facilities open. The caucus report concluded that library branches in the inner city were being neglected: None is staffed by a professional librarian, only one has a visible sign indicating it is a library, and they are open only 6-24 hours a week. An additional $400,000 allocated by the Chatham County Commission in January will be used to increase hours, purchase Internet access computers, and enhance collections at the six branches. According to the April 21 Savannah Morning News, the board plans to request an additional $1.5 million from the county; library officials said they could not open the renovated main library on Bull Street without at least $876,000 to hire additional employees.
