Ohio Attorney General Charges Baker and Taylor with Overcharging

Following an investigation that began last October, Ohio State Attorney General Betty Montgomery filed suit March 30 against book wholesaler Baker and Taylor for allegedly overcharging the state's libraries.

The lawsuit charges that Baker and Taylor sold trade books to libraries for 13 years at smaller discounts than those agreed to in contracts. Montgomery said that when asked about the discrepancies, the firm would often blame the problem on computer error.

“Filing this lawsuit closes a chapter of fraud against Ohio's libraries,” said Montgomery, who estimates that the libraries lost $3.1 million from 1989 to 1994. “This was a practice that went on for years and cost Ohio taxpayers dearly.” The state seeks actual and compensatory damages, investigative fees, expenses, and other costs.
